Paralympic champion Rob Davies, who won his fourth consecutive men’s class 1 European singles title in Sweden in September, has been nominated for the Male Para Table Tennis Star award at the prestigious 2019 ITTF Star Awards.
The annual awards celebrate the best of international table tennis and are attended by leading players and coaches from all over the world. The Welshman is one of three players nominated along with class 3 World number one and European champion Thomas Schmidberger from Germany and the class 7 World number two and Asian champion Yan Shuo from China.
The winner will be announced at a glittering ceremony that will take place in Zhengzhou, China on Wednesday, December 11th.
“I’m really happy to be nominated,” said Davies, who was also nominated in 2013 after winning his first European title. “It is a privilege and I guess it is for winning the Europeans for a fourth consecutive time; I’m proud to have done that and it is nice to have been recognised for that.”
The World number two bounced back this year after a disappointing season in 2018 to also win gold in the Italian Open and now has his sights set on defending his Paralympic title.
“It is important for me in my table tennis career because it shows I am still up there and can compete at the top level and I am looking forward to Tokyo now. I’m really excited about next year; I’m looking forward to getting back into regular training through the winter and pushing myself and we’ll see what we can do.”
