Tom Jarvis, Maria Tsaptsinos and Sam Mabey all won their opening singles matches at the Poland Open, while there was also success for England in the under-21 and doubles competitions.

Jarvis, having beaten Huang Yu-Jen of Chinese Taipei in his first group match, can book a place in the knockout stage by defeating India’s Abhishek Yadav today, while Mabey overcame Iceland’s Birgir Ivarsson and now faces Xu Yingbin in his final group match today.

Matthew Daish was defeated in both his group matches yesterday, though he fought hard against two higher-ranked opponents, including European under-21 champion Ioannis Sgouropoulos of Greece, before going down 3-1 in each match.

In the women’s singles, Tsaptsinos defeated Czech Anna Matejovska 12-10 in the decider, having seen her opponent level from 2-0 down. A win over Ana Tofant of Slovenia today will put Tsaptsinos through.

However, both Emily Bolton and Denise Payet were defeated in their opening group matches by opponents from Chinese Taipei.

In the under-21 singles, Jarvis won his last-64 match against an Italian opponent. Daish was drawn against top seed Denis Ivonin of Russia but again gave a decent account of himself, taking the second game before going down 3-1.

Payet saved three match points against Karoline Mischek of Austria before going down 3-1 in the under-21 women’s singles, but Bolton won her match to reach the last 32.

In the men’s doubles, Jarvis and Daish were both winners in the preliminary round – Jarvis alongside Elias Ranefur of Sweden and Daish with Aleksa Gacev of Serbia. But Mabey and partner Peter Hribar of Slovenia went out.

Tin-Tin Ho – who is seeded 21st in the women’s singles – got through her preliminary round doubles match alongside Mischek, but Bolton & Payet went out to a Swedish pair.
