You have never seen a table tennis club like this before! KX Tribe, a group which evolved from Ping! tables near King’s Cross station, is now home to a diverse group of talented and competitive players.
The tables in Granary Square, just behind the London railway terminus, are under cover, well lit and always accessible – so they became a magnet for players.
What quickly became obvious was that the location was drawing in not just social players but also a number of regulars of a good standard, in search of competitive table tennis.
The amalgamation of social and competitive play, alongside the possibility of meeting table tennis enthusiasts from all walks of life, has created a real club atmosphere outside a traditional club setting.
The Tribe’s members come from every corner of the world and they enjoy not only playing at all levels, but also welcoming beginners, engaging with a diverse community, developing personal skills and enjoying active companionship.
Not only does it cater for those who may not be able to or wish to attend traditional clubs, it has also acted as a launchpad for some who have gone on to register with more ‘formal’ clubs, showing that it can pay dividends for clubs to look to build connections with the Ping! community as part of their recruitment drives.
Some of the comments of the players show just how vibrant the KX Tribe setting is:
“It’s a really interesting sociological phenomena how table tennis is able to bring people together from the most diverse backgrounds.”
“They always have their eye out for someone who they don’t know – they’re very welcoming and they will find your level and someone to play with.”
“We all love it – we’re all table tennis nerds from all walks of life.”
