An extraordinary teenager with a passion for table tennis shared his story on BBC1’s flagship The One Show tonight.

Adam Sharp, who plays at Luton TTC, has overcome numerous challenges to take his GCSEs this year.

On the day the exam results were published, Adam was one of three teenagers to feature on the BBC1 primetime programme, with table tennis and his Paralympic dream a big part of the segment.

Adam, 16, was asked to be a part of the programme because he has had a brain tumour since the age of four, which has led to four brain operations and two years of chemotherapy, as well as other medical procedures.

Despite this and the resulting disabilities, he took a full set of GCSEs this year, with support from his family and teachers at Roundwood Park School in Harpenden.

His mum Jos said: “What is more, he has kept up with all of his sporting, musical and creative passions that provide him with the motivation and mental strength to tackle his revision and exams. He has to read things five times before they sink in, which is extremely time consuming.”

The One Show filmed Adam at home last week to capture footage of him playing his baritone, performing magic tricks and looking at revision aids.

His mum added: “His biggest passion is table tennis and he has just been selected for the British Para Table Tennis Team Futures Squad, so he was therefore very keen to have this included in the film they have made of him to play on the show.

“He is only just starting on his para table tennis journey and, of course, would love to represent his country at the Paralympics, but we are a long way off that yet.”

Adam plays under the guidance of Luton TTC founder and head coach Elroy Edwards, who said: “Adam is a fun player with great potential. He loves table tennis and he has high aspiration in achieving something from the sport. He is very humble and never avoids knocking with anyone and is very determined on improving his skills.”
