Paul Drinkhall’s brilliant win over world No 7 Hugo Calderano was not enough to help his club win their play-off semi-final in the German Bundesliga.

Drinkhall saw off the Brazilian in three straight (11-6, 11-7, 11-6) to level the match at 1-1 for his TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt team against TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen.

It was revenge for a defeat to Calderano in the first leg of the match two weeks earlier.

Ochsenhausen had taken the lead when Simon Gauzy beat Benedikt Duda, and they went on to win the overall match 3-1 – the same score as in the first leg – and take their place in the final as Stefan Fegerl defeated Alvaro Robles and Calderano overcame Duda.

Meanwhile, in the French Pro A league, Liam Pitchford came face-to-face with Sam Walker as Hennebont and Istres met.

And it was Pitchford who came out on top in both their personal duel and the overall match, as he defeated Walker comfortably 3-0 (11-6, 11-2, 11-8).

Walker had earlier won the opening match for Istres, defeating world No 55 Cedric Nuytinck of Belgium 3-1 (8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6), but Pitchford made it 1-1 as he beat Paul Gauzy 3-0 (11-2, 11-9, 11-5).

Wu Zhang Jiaji put Istres back in front in five against Fan Shengpeng, but Pitchford levelled when he defeated Walker – who will replace Pitchford in the Hennebont line-up next season.

And it was left to Nuytinck to defeat Gauzy 3-0 (4, 9, 7) to complete a 3-2 victory for Hennebont, who remain level at the top of the league with Jura Morez. Istres are in ninth place.
