Five English players were knocked out of the Hungarian Open yesterday in the preliminary rounds of the singles.
In the men’s, David McBeath was knocked out after a 4-3 loss to Hungary’s Adam Szudi, while Tom Jarvis exited at the hands of France’s Stephane Ouaiche following a 4-1 defeat.
Sam Walker was narrowly defeated by Poland’s Marek Badowski in a seven-setter.
Paul Drinkhall progressed to Preliminary Round 2 after a 4-0 win over the home nation’s Do Phuong Nam, but was then knocked out after a 4-1 defeat to Portugal’s Tiago Apolonia (world ranked 39).
Maria Tsaptsinos was the only English player in the women’s singles. She lost 4-1 against Slovenia’s Alex Galic.
Wales’ Charlotte Carey also entered the tournament, but was knocked out in the first round by China’s Sun Mingyang.
Carey also partnered Jarvis in the mixed doubles, but they were defeated 3-1 by Serbia’s Aleksandar Karakasevic & Izabela Lupulesku.
The Men’s Doubles begins today with Paul Drinkhall & Sam Walker facing France’s Tristan Flore & Emmanuel Lebesson. Liam Pitchford & Cedric Nuytinck (BEL) will play Aviv Ben-Ari (ISR) & Luka Mladenovic (LUX).
Tsaptsinos & Carey are in the Women’s Doubles and will face Poland’s Natalia Bajor & Natalia Partyka.
Liam Pitchford, seeded eight in the competition, will join the Men’s Single’s on Thursday in the knockout rounds.
