Urban TTC’s defence of the Premier British League continued in excellent fashion as they battled past Ormeau 3-2 in a clash of the league’s top two sides.
Satoshi Aida was Urban’s matchwinner once again as the Japanese star won his two singles matches, including a decisive three-set triumph over Matt Ware.
Ormeau played their part in the thrilling spectacle, which saw them clinch the first set before levelling in the fourth. But Aida’s two wins over Owen Cathcart and Ware were complemented by Daniel Schaffer’s victory over Gavin Maguire to extend their unbeaten start to the campaign.
Ware and Maguire had come from 2-1 down in the opening doubles match to defeat the team of Alim Hirji and Schaffer.
Although Aida and Schaffer then put Urban ahead, Cathcart defeated Hirji 3-0 to set up a deciding set on the afternoon.
But Aida stepped up to ensure Urban remained top.
They are just one point ahead of Ormesby, who kept their own unbeaten run intact as they defeated Fusion 4-1.
It was a case of what could have been for the league’s bottom side, as they lost the two opening sets in the fifth.
Lorestas Trumpauskas and James Smith surrendered a 2-1 lead as they went down to Darius Knight and Liam McTiernan before Reed was pushed the distance by Hee.
Although Hee would get Fusion a consolation as he defeated McTiernan, Knight and Reed defeated Smith and Trumpauskas respectively to leapfrog Ormeau in the table after four rounds.
Joint third and level with Ormeau are Drumchapel, who defeat Cardiff 4-1.
It was a harsh scoreline on the Welsh outfit, who lost three of the sets in the fifth.
The doubles set was a straightforward win for the team of Victor Guang Shi and Tang Yao, as they eased to victory over Tom Maynard and Dean Cundy.
But the next three sets all went to a decider.
Simon Berglund, world ranked 220th, first fought off two comebacks to defeat Jiawang Song.
Tang Yao then was forced to come from two ends down to defeat Dean Cundy.
Maynard then came almightily close to a huge victory over Berglund, establishing a 2-1 lead before going down in the fifth.
But Cardiff did have something to show for their efforts as Song defeated Shi 3-0 in the final set of the contest.
The final fixture of the round saw North Ayrshire end BATTS’ two-match winning run with a 3-2 triumph.
Colin Dalgleish was the star as he won his two singles matches, with Zak Wilson chipping in with the decisive set.
BATTS went ahead as Steve Beerling and Jack Bennett defeated Chris Main and Wilson in the doubles.
But Wilson’s four-end win over Bennett was sandwiched by two Dalgleish’s two wins, as he overcame Ethan Walsh and Beerling. Walsh pulled one back for BATTS as he saw off Main.
