The Hunts 2* Open finished with a spectacular display of attacking table tennis from Darius Knight against Niall Cameron.
This popular event in the table tennis calendar was badly affected by the clash with Senior British League which was belatedly fixed unseasonably early for the same weekend. However, despite many cancelled entries, we proceeded with the tournament and were treated to a fantastic display of competition over the course of two days.
On Saturday, James Smith ruled supreme with the Junior Boys and U21 Men’s titles while Kirsty Maull had a successful day winning the Cadets, Juniors and U21 Women’s titles.
Juniors Day
On Saturday, Kirsty Maull started her day with victory over Hannah Silcock from Jersey in the Cadets. She then went on to secure the Junior Girls’ title, with Charlotte Marsden coming second, and won the U21 Women’s final, beating Holly McGerty to complete a great achievement.
New boy on the block Shem Lejarde was a very impressive winner with Victor Ramierez-Rioja coming second in the Cadet Boys.
Huntingdon player Louis Roper-Gibbs had a fabulous tournament but came up against an indefatigable James Smith in the finals of both Junior Boys and U21 Men. Congratulations are due to both Louis and James for their great performances on both days.
Seniors Day
On Sunday the Women’s Singles was won by Charlotte Marsden and Holly McGerty was second. The Women’s Banded saw Carrie Cope triumph with Charlotte Boston second.
In the Veterans’ final, Taiwo Adedayo won in a brilliant five-setter against Tony Briscoe. The Men’s Banded saw Niall Cameron triumph over James Smith in a gruelling five-setter.
Cameron also came up against Darius Knight in the final of the Men’s Singles. However, the story was different in this final and Darius was just too sharp for Niall, winning in three straight sets to take this year’s crown.
